About

Dr Louise Edgington CPsychol
Chartered Educational Psychologist
specialist in climate psychology

I have a longstanding awareness and interest in climate change mitigation, having studied Climate and Atmospheric Physics and Energy Studies modules within a Masters in Physics at the University of Oxford. This led to an internship with (Blomberg) New Energy Finance followed by 4 years as secondary school science teacher, before retraining as an educational psychologist at the UCL Institute of Education.

After the climate activism of 2018, it became clear that more was needed. The science wasn't enough.  I wondered, 'why do we find it so hard to think about and take action on climate change?'

To answer this question, in 2019 I started a working group of psychologists offering eco-emotions resources and workshops to our community in London, and at UCL where I was lecturing.

After struggling to change the local authority and educational systems from within, this developed into the

ClimatEdPsych project, which uses insights from psychology to help people think clearly about the challenges we face, to live well with our eco-emotions, and to take sustainable actions that support positive societal change and resilience.

This happens at school, organisational and system level via:

Workshops and conference talks:

I am a member of Climate Psychology Alliance and give talks and workshops through their networks including to Kew Gardens, the British Association of Zoos and Aquariums the Wellcome Trust.

Freelance, I give talks for a wide range of organisations such as:

National Education Union, Society of Heads, Climate Ambassadors, Let's Go Zero, University College London, the Association of Educational Psychologists, Westminster, Kensington and Chelsea council, the British Psychological Society,

Anchor housing association, Sustainable Energy First, Blackpool council, Worcestershire sustainable schools network, RSPB, Growing Space London, the International Commission on Couple and Family Relations and London Climate Action Week.

I also hold climate wellness workshops online and at festivals, including Verve, Orbit and Wellnergy.

Support spaces

I co-facilitate Climate Psychology Alliance Youth Support Spaces and host

Climate Staffroom spaces for teacher support, both open to the public and through groups such as Climate Majority Project and Climate Psychology Alliance with Cambridge University Press.

Writing and consultation

When time allows, I contribute to publications including the British Psychological Society's magazine, the Psychologist, SATIPS sustainability broadsheet, Tooled-Up and the Independent Schools Magazine. I have featured in the Bloomberg Green and the Sunday Times.

ClimatEdPsych resources and case studies feature on their Sustainability Support for Education platform and in the UKHSA Climate Change and Mental Health report.

I provide expert advisory input to UK government departments through stakeholder engagement, bringing psychological idea to climate education, wellbeing and mental health related policy discussions.

I also consult and advise on other organisations' 'ecoanxiety' materials and content, including for the Climate Psychologists, Young Climate Warriors and the PSHE Association.

Campaigns and volunteering:

I volunteer and contribute to campaigns and projects, including the British Psychological Society's Climate and Environment Action Coordinating Group, Imperial Climate Cares Compass Project, Climate Majority Project Climate Courage Campaign, and the Climate Minds Coalition.

Rest and Reflection

I engage in peer supervision with the EcoEdPsychs group and  Climate Psychology Alliance, and reflective practice with the wonderful senior Educational Psychologist, Jane Roller.

I am grounded by yoga and meditation, sangha, reiki, moon circle, book club, flora and fungi, the woods, my husband and 2 beautiful children in Surrey.
